Films To Go See This Week

Ahhh its that time again when we either want to go out and cuddle with someone under the projector heads and either be scared stiffless by some ghoulish fiend, have your heart racing by some kick ass hero or sigh as two (completely made for each other pretty) strangers fall in (obvious) love. We'll have a look.

Friends With Benefits.

You head over to any movie website and the tag line is this "trying to avoid Hollywood cliches," which is a ludicrous plot for a romantic comedy. Because, unless you have hit the nail on the original head (my space goat and sea llama love story has yet to be picked up,) its hard to not see where this movie is heading (full review up tomorrow.) Dylan and Jaime are best friends who decided that relationships are to tricky and all they are after is just sex. But will they discover there is more to their relationship than they first thought? What do you think?

With a surprising turn from Justin Timberlake (yes, he is still acting) and the mighty fine Mila Kunis (shut up Meg,) delight in this warm fuzzy comedy.

Colombiana.

But if warm and fuzzy isn't exactly what you are looking for, then Colombiana is just for you; a film that takes warm and fuzzy then kicks the shit out of them both. Fuzzy will never look the same. Colombiana tells the story of Cataleya who watched her parents be brutally murdered in front of her. Now grown up, she is a hit woman for her uncle and is wanted by the police and bad guys a like. Just watch out evil, she is going to make you pay.

Colombiana is quick paced and energetic. It stars the beautiful Zoe Saldana (Uhora and Neytiri) in action figure mode.

Jane Eyre

If you don't know about Jane Eyre, you probably did the more interesting books at school and I envy you. Whilst there are hundreds upon hundreds (well, not that many) of Jane Eyre adaptations this is the new one that follows the same plot. Staring Alice in Wonderland and Young Magneto.... Erm Sorry I mean Mia Wasikowska and Micheal Fassbender, Jane Eyre tells the story of a shy unimportant governess who soon woes over the master of the house, only to find out he is hiding a terrible secret.

With beautiful scenery and classic English refinery, Jane Eyre is possibley...for...well....take your Nan, she'll love it.

Other films out this week is horror comedy from Norway, Trollhunter and a chilling thrilling set in the Scottish highlands called A Lonely Place To Die.

I Think You Should See: Battle Royale

Battle Royale for me has many back stories of my life. For instance, it will always reminds me of certain friends who have quite the passion for Japan and all things Japanese (Kirsteen, Harry, James and Elizabeth.) Also, it will remind me of when my sister, Louise, kicked off about me and friends bringing the film home for us all to watch because it had subtitles only for her to now have a pretty amazing Tartan Asian Extreme collection at her house. It's the littlest memories surrounding this film that push this film for me from a great one to an epic one. And despite rumors, we haven't had an American shitty remake yet so fingers crossed guys.

Battle Royale is a Japanese film based on a novel of the same name. It was made in 2000 and is set in a universe where teenagers, disillusioned with authority and life become rebellious and violent (acts include destroying schools and stabbing teachers.) To fight this, the Japanese government create the Millennial Education Reform Act otherwise known as the Battle Royale Act. For those out of the loop with just what  Battle Royale means; its a fight for the death. Unfortunately for our hero Shuya, his friend Nobu and his love Noriko, his class are next on the list to play the game. The idea is that all the classmates fight until one of them is left standing after three days. If there is more than one the collars they have around there next will explode meaning no one is the winner. They are each armed with a survival kit, a map and a weapon (from helpful guns to ridiculous saucepan lids.) And to make things harder, zones will become danger zone meaning any student in them will die. Whilst others plunge themselves gleefully into their new murderous ways, some refuse while the rest try to survive. Battle Royal begs the question; could you kill your best friend?

Battle Royale is a cult classic; the acting from the young Tatsuya Fujiware to the older beloved Takeshi Kitano (you'll know him from Takeshi's Castle, I kid you not) is superb. Not only are there slight bits of humor but the distress, anguish and downright fear are conveyed perfectly as well as an evil teacher (Kitano) and his battle with his own personal demons. As far out as this plot goes, all of the actors bring. believably, a tale of struggle in this chaotic Japan. There are also brilliant psychotic characters that bring alive the film from the kid who is playing for fun, Kiriyama and lonely but damn near demonic Mitsuko and they weave delicately but perfectly with the love and friendship others have.

And let's not forget that this film is pretty damn scary. Instead of relying on old folklore or haunted video tapes, director Kinji Fukasaku and author of the original book play on the worst aspect of the human psyche; our willingness to kill to survive. It's haunting to think about what we would do in that situation as school mate murders school mate that in prior Battle Royale scenes were best friends. The best part of this film is the paranoia and suspicion of each other causes them to kill one another. That dark turning of a screw that makes you turn on someone you loved or supposedly love. There is also a brilliant score of Dies Irae from Giuseppe Verdi's Requim that anytime you hear it, your hairs will stand on end.

There are moments, though, within this film that play dully and the repetitiveness of students falling for one another only for them to be in love with another gets beyond ridiculous at some points. And lets not forget that nearly every boy loves Noriko and every girl has the hots for Shuya. By the end of all the confessions you start feeling a bit like Mitsuko who taunts Noriko for having "two knights" to protect her. And whilst you touch on Kitano's home life there is so much story to tell and despite this being touched upon prolifically in the horrendous sequel just a few more sentences before the end would clear things up just a little.

Battle Royale is a tender balance; it is the perfect sum of humanity that is pushed to the edge of destruction. Whilst there are slices of comedy with pure horror, Battle Royale still remains a terrifying masterpiece. And although it strummed up much controversy at the time, there is not a shadow of doubt that Battle Royale is a fear we have every time our government seems on the brink of anarchy. You feel that shudder, that's your human side.

Now, in light of recent English riots, did anyone just get a great idea?

Or maybe I'm just totally kidding

Maybe.

Box Office News

I'm going to keep this short and simple. In the third week running, The Help has grossed out $19 million at US box office and has kicked Apollo 18's butt. And The Inbetweeners have done exactly the same with Apollo 18 and Fright Night grossing at over £24 million.

So there is nothing new here just that we all love a bit of loserdom.

And we absolutely love a heart warming film against racism but with Emma Stone.

Hmmm Emma Stone.

Film News Round Up: 29 - 5 August

It has been a whole week since the last installment of Film News (but maybe we could make that a thing, like a weekly thing...or not, you know.) and I apologize but please be happy with a lot of film news that I have deemed too good to miss or completely horrible to not write sarcastic comments about them.

Good News

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is the film that gets the British cockles going. Not only is it based on a British spy novel by a British author but boasts an extremely British cast with British names such as Benedict Cumberbatch. You can't get much British than that. So done your pride as brand new clips of the film hit online and we are all wondering who the spy is (that is all who haven't read the book.) Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy hits screens on September 16th.

The Avengers will be talked about constantly for a year until its release. Why? Because it's awesome that's why, do not question it. The movie will blow your socks off. In a series of prequels that will firstly grace the DVD Thor, Marvel slowly will release the story. The first is The Consultant and clips have hit online. The clip revolves around Agent Coulsen and Agent Sitwell discussing some pretty shady orders from Emil Blonksy. It's all mysterious and not mysterious at the same time. Here is the clip;

Margaret is a film that certainly has me excited and that has nothing to do with the fact that it stars Anna Paquin and Mark Ruffalo. Nothing at all. Nothing. Ok, maybe a little. The Margaret trailer has finally arrived. I say finally because it looked for a while that we were never going to see it. Margaret tells the title of a Margaret (obviously,) a girl who witnesses a fatal bus accident and is caught in the aftermath slowly spirally out of control. Sure it be drama filled and powerful, Margaret has everyone talking.

Bad News

Hollywood is like the teenage popular girls you see in bad romantic comedies that takes the nerdy but infinite better Japanese films home for a makeover. The end result is making the brilliance just the same boring blandness they have been churning out but with a bit more "shiny." So suffice to say that David R Ellis is one of those popular girls (that was responsible for Snakes On A Plane,) has taken Anime great Kite by Yasumoi Umetsu and plans to remake it. Known for gratuitous sex and violent scenes, David R Ellis (who also made Shark Night 3D) wants to destroy it and bring it to the big screen. To soothe that headachey news, here's a trailer for the original;

So we've already established Hollywood as that relentless hot girl who wouldn't quit. But let's face it, Hollywood is a bitch and won't end her reign of terror until it tortures every soul to be named Queen Bee. Her next victim is Korean masterpeice Oldboy. We already established that this is a sin against nature. So Josh Brolin has signed up to be our hero. or villian, whichever way you take it.... no villian, there are no heroes in this.

Finally in bad news, we get a possible host for the Oscars because last years hosts were so well received. So who could pick up the shambles? Eddie Murphy. Don't get me wrong if I was writing this in the 80's (and you were reading in on those magazines that were so popular then) then I'd be loving the stand up in hosting duty. However, he has had far too many flops and bad publicity that this could be just as disastrous as a cross dressing James Franco.

Yikes.

I Can't Decide

In a new segment to this, I can't decide whether this is good news or bad news so I'll let you chose.

On the subject of Anne Hathaway, rumors are circling to whether or not she will star in the movie version of Les Miserable. There are hopes that she will play Fantine, the distressed mother of Cosette. There is o doubt that Hathaway can sing a little ditty or too but the material (and the role of Fantine) is beloved and very very dark so it will be a tricky subject to tackle and other adaptations of musicals can either be great or bad. There is also rumor of Oklahoma remake star Hugh Jackman (you probably haven't heard of him, tee hee) to star as Jean Valjean. Huh.

Talking about Hugh Jackman (do you like my linking skills?,) The Wolverine has a new writer Mark Bomback to take over writing ship. The Wolverine starts where Origins kick off but this time is set in the heart of the Japanese criminal underworld where he battles Viper and the Silver Samurai. There has been a hold on The Wolverine, a fresh new outing of the X-Men favourite, since Jackman jumped ship from kicking evil mutant butt to singing about the terrors of 1900's France.

Huh.

Review: Fright Night

Fright Night didn't sum up to many great emotions in me. After all, it is a film that commits two of the greatest sins in Hollywood; its a remake and it latches on to the biggest franchise going. Although Twilight is coming down from its reign of terror ( can I get a woop woop?) goddamn vampires will always be the hottest horror monster and the makers of the new Fright Night know that. With all that in mind, Fright Night is destined to be either brilliant or bland and somehow it is a bit of both.

Following the similar vein of the 1985 cult classic, Fright Night is a tale about Charley (Anton Yelchin) ; a 17 year old geek turned popular boy who is currently living life smoothly with his mother (Toni Collette). That is until a bunch of disappearances start occurring in his Las Vegas suburb and all since his creepy neighbour Jerry (Colin Farrell) moved in. Spurned by his friend Ed's (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) crazy paranoia and accusations, Charley investigates only to find the horrific truth; Jerry is a bloodsucking vampire and is hell bent on ruining your evening. Going straight into the arms of magician and "vampire hunter" Peter Vincent (David Tennant) Charley must do everything in his power to stop Jerry from taking his mother and his girlfriend (Imogean Poots.)

Fright Night is one of those films that works well and is supposed to be viewed in 3D. Very much like Final Destination the shock and actions scenes work terrifyingly as weapons, blood and fire ball straight out of the screen. The 3D is certainly used brilliantly in Fright Night because not only those the shock graphics delight and make you squeal but it also invites you into the world around Charley. There are certain moments of delicacy that seem real enough whilst watching (the ash falling works pretty well.) It is also nice to watch a film where the vampires aren't made to be brooding emotional twerps but instead their true face is ugly, monstrous and frightening which is much a credit to the special effects team as the 3D.

The adults in the film are definitely a highlight. Colin Farrell plays the menacing seductive vampire wonderfully as he stalks his prey with cool calm precision and fires quip after quip whilst being an evil murdering beast. David Tennant, too, plays the alcoholic Peter Vincent as a fantastic comedic relief and certainly entertains well for every second he is on the screen playing what I like to call, a gothed up, drugged up Doctor Who,

But unfortunately, for fresh young talent, the two leads, Anton Yelchin and Imogean Poots don't sparkle as much on screen as their adult counterparts do. Although they are the main characters and sufficient actors, they don't have many times to shine despite the epic finale and thus blend into the background. And there are two actors within this movie who deservedly need more screen time. The amazing Toni Collette and the upcoming McLovin...oh I mean Chistopher Mintz-Plasse, have great scenes but are brushed away under the carpet.

For a comedy horror, Fright Night doesn't have a lot of either and you could quiet easily skip this after watching the trailers. Whilst it keeps the cheese fest horror of the original, it loses its excitement in a matter of minutes becoming just a regular teenage suburban flick. It will make you chuckle but barely and though it is thick in blood, it isn't enough to keep you staying up at night. Certainly, it makes a nice rented movie if there is nothing else on but doesn't have enough gusto for you to fork out your dosh on this bland re-make. But, at least it isn't Twilight.

2.5/5

Films To Go See This Week.

Don't know what to do for this weekend? Want to see a film but have exhausted the amount of times you have seen The Inbetweener's? Well, we will have a look at the couple of films that are being released this week that will tantalize your film buds.

Fright Night

Imagine, you are just a regular American teenager. You have a beautiful girlfriend, a slightly crazy best friend and a vampire as a next door neighbour. Wait, what? Exactly, that is what happens to Charley (Anton Yelchin) when bloodthirsy Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves next door, killing victims across town. It is up to Charley, his mom (Toni Collette) and best friend (Christopher Mintz-Plasse aka McLovin,) to destroy Jerry and his evil ways.

A remake of the 1985 film of the same name, Fright Night is that brilliant blend of comedy and horror with fantastic acting that will be perfect.

Apollo 18

Ok so maybe that's not up your street. Well, imagine this; the previously cancelled Apollo 18 shuttle mission actually went but never came back. Set in a mockumentary found footage that tells its secret tale, the astronauts of the flights fin themselves in a horror movie but with no where to scream. The resulting story is the reason (in this reality) that United States has never travelled back to the moon. Spooky stuff.

Even more terrifying is watching this and then realizing that the United States has ended it's shuttle missions now. Maybe there is something they are telling us. Maybe Apollo 18 is true.

The Art of Getting By

So this week's indie flick focusing on the lonely  George (yes, that is  Freddie Highmore, child actors have to grow up sooner or later. I mean Macaulay Culkin turned 31 this week. Yes, 31. ....Anyway...) The film is about shy loner George falling for popular yet complicated Sally. George has glided by school without having done a single day of hard work but soon recognizes a kindred spirit in her and works to get her.

With quirky comedy and indie love, The Art Of Getting By is your new favourite film as long as it isn't extremely popular, you hipster you.

The other movies out this week are British Horror/Comedy Kill List and Bollywood Bol.

Best TV Theme Songs: Sitcoms (And A Sketch Show)

So we have already explored the top theme songs of our childhood here and here but as we grow older are tastes become more refined. We still don't want to grow up from slapstick humor but a few harmless witty jokes about sex and drinking and we have entered the realm of TV Show Sitcoms/Sketch Shows. But which one had the funniest or catchiest theme song. Aww here we go;

Frasier.

Frasier is a spin off of Cheers with radio psychiatrist Frasier crane taking the helm in this well refined show. But of course, Frasier and his brother Miles are still odd ball goofs committing the same cardinal sins that we all do as they struggle awkward in the real world of women. With a pretty down to earth father, wacky maid and weird dog, Frasier show has enough hilarious moments to watch every morning. The theme song is just as classy and is sung by none other than Kelsey Grammer himself as the skyline of Seattle is drawn out for us. It's pretty finger snappy.

Cheers

The predecessor to Fraiser and everyones favourite bar, Cheers was situated in the heart of New York as a hapless band of drinkers and bartenders tackle life by down a few beers. With stars such as Kirstie Alley and Pixar favourite John Ratzenburger, you always new where to turn to and this theme song gives you chills. It's a s though you are getting that bear hug, the comforting arm around the sholder as you drown your sorrows in the 50th beer. Do me a favour though, truly listen to the lyrics of this whole theme song and laugh at the situations that the singer proclaims. I swear your in for a surprise.

Malcolm In The Middle

I would like to point out that many watch Malcolm in the Middle as a children's show and then I would like to point out that you are wrong. Whilst the hijinks the four brothers get into is wildly slapstick, Malcolm In The Middle protests dark humour of working class suburban life with the cynical mother Louis and the hilarious dad, Hal (the brilliant Bryan Craston.)The theme song is by rocking punk band They May Be Giants (who also sing the Choo Choo Express in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, go figure,) and sums up perfect angst of Malcolm, a genius boy who still wants to pull pranks. Fun fact; Frankie Muntz has never exceeded the height of Malcolm in the show (citation needed)

Men Behaving Badly

Everything we loved about the British 90's all wrapped up into a funky show, Men Behaving Badly focused on Gary Strong and his idiot of a housemate Neil as two men trying to navigate their lifes (and penis') through a trouble road. Throw in a couple of women (Pauline Quintin and Lesley Ash before the trout pout) and you have a sure fire UK sitcom that was full of putrid humor and hilarious scenarios. The theme song is a jazz rock romp that is hummed and sung by the men of today as they remember television of yesteryear.

The Young Ones

What would exactly happen if you threw a hippie, a yuppie, a punk and an anarchist into the same house? Well, you'd get the young ones; a chaotic vile slapstick sitcom that you have to watch before you eat your tea. Set in 80's Britain and staring Rick Mayall and Nigel Planner, The Young Ones has an energy and comedy only kept to the rooms of your younger brother and his mates. It's disgusting but utterly hilarious. The Young Ones must evidently take the classic Cliff Richard song and turn it into a cockney embroiled song and it is beyond weird.

Monty Python's Flying Circus

Not exactly a sitcom but a sketch show and perhaps the only one in this list. Monty Python is responsible for the whole world of geeks and nerds shouting "Ni" at you or remarking about their dead parrot. It is also responsible for shows like The Simpsons. It was groundbreaking comedy from now famous actors/writers that summed up idiocy in an extremely clever way. Whilst on the outside it seems all rather silly (so stop it now,) the show had genius moments, crude cartoons and spun out into four feature films. If you don't know the theme song, you have been depraved. Just listen.

Only Fools & Horses.

I cant name you one person I know who didn't grow up watching this show. And if I can, well, I don't really know them that well and wouldn't call them a friend; more like a depraved acquaintance. Perhaps the best loved British sitcom ever, Only Fools & Horses is the tale of working class brothers Del and Rodney Trotter as they try to become millionaires. With hap handed schemes and rotten deals, the Trotters has become a trademark for hilarity. I mean, who thinks of Batman and doesn't immediately think of Del Trotter running in the streets of Peckham. The theme song is just that down and out luck with a hint of making no sense but it doesn't matter, the la's do though.

Scrubs

If you are seriously ill and need medical assistance than I would stay clear of Sacred Heart. JD is a young doctor making his way up the ranks of the Hospital. Unfortunately for his patience, he is lost in his own world narrator from a weird point of view. Along the way he has love with Elliot, bromance with Turk and an unrequited admiration for mean but caring Dr Cox. Of course Scrubs isn't without the sentiment and just at the moment when you are squirting milk from your nose ("but I didn't even have milk today) Scrubs hit you with a tear jerking tender moment. The theme song sums up all how we feel in life and especially doctors that while they could save your life, are still human after all.

Friends

One of the most famous theme songs and sitcoms of all time. You, like me and thousands across the globe, still marvel and laugh along to re-runs of this genius sitcom. Friends, just in case you didn't know (hahahahaha) is about the ups and down of, Ross, Rachel, Joey, Phoebe, Monica and Chandler and the hilarious situation they get up to on the streets of New York. Running ten seasons and ending just over a decade ago, everyone still loves this show. The theme is sung by The Remembrandts and is known across the globe as the Friends salute. It pretty much sums up everyones life as well. Altogether "clapclapclapclapclapclap."

Fresh Prince Of Bel Air.

Do I even have to explain why this is here? Do I even have to explain the show? Nay, do I even have to show you the theme song? I bet you are already singing it in your head already. Fresh Prince brought Will Smith to our screens and the theme brought him to our ears. Fresh Prince is about Will as he is sent from the mean streets of Philadelphia to live with his rich Aunt and Uncle in LA. Hilarity ensues as it is a battle of classes takes place. The theme is played around clubs everywhere and you can't turn around to anyone and say "this is a story all about how" and not break into the rap.

Smell Ya Later.
